A: Certainly! But first, we’ll make sure to compare the costs and benefits with you.
Generally, natural gas will help your furnace work far more efficiently, and it eliminates the need to have a tank filled with oil regularly, since natural gas is piped continuously into your home or business. And because most natural gas is produced within the United States, its pricing tends to be less volatile than foreign-dependent oil.
Of course, it does require that you have or can get a natural gas hookup. And the conversion costs are somewhat high up front.

Q: Is a Meyer & Depew service contract really necessary?
A: While not required, it certainly makes a lot of sense.
Some service contracts, like those you might be offered when buying electronics, don’t generally get used before they expire. The product outlasts the protection.
But a Meyer & Depew service contract includes regularly scheduled maintenance of complicated and expensive systems that support your entire home or business every day of the year. We thoroughly clean and adjust all your heating and cooling systems—some of which could be over a decade old. And we test mold and allergy centers like your air ducts to find out whether they need cleaning.
When it comes to extending the life of your equipment, avoiding imminent breakdowns and ensuring the comfort and quality of your environment, it’s really a no-brainer to sign up for an annual Meyer & Depew service contract.
Another important reason to consider a contract: Most manufacturers require you to perform regular preventive maintenance to keep their warranties valid.
Some service plans require you to call for service, but ours don’t. We’ll call you when it’s time for your annual inspection and arrange an appointment at your convenience.
Q: Is there any heating or cooling maintenance I can or should do myself?
A: Absolutely. Change your filters regularly, based on the manufacturer’s recommendations. Walk around the building every three months—inside and outside—to check for easy-to-see problems such as crowded or obstructed airflows, damaged pipes or hoses, and other obvious performance hazards.
Please don’t handle complex or dangerous tasks yourself, as you may damage your equipment, home or commercial building; expose yourself or others to harm; and void certain warranties. It is safer and often less expensive in the long run to have a certified Meyer & Depew technician provide professional service.
Q: What should I do if I smell gas?
A: If the smell is overwhelming and/or persistent, vacate all people from your home immediately and call emergency services from a neighbor’s home or your cell phone, from outside your home.
When in doubt, always err on the side of your and other’s well-being; gas leaks are serious, potentially fatal matters that require your immediate and prudent attention to preserve all human life.
At your own risk, you may wish to do a quick check to see whether your oven or a stove burner is on. If so, you may choose to turn off the gas flow and open all windows and doors, making sure to NOT light a flame of any sort until you are sure that was the cause and end of the problem (i.e., there is no more gas smell).
Q: What should I do about a leak or puddle around my water heater or air conditioner?
A: As with gas smells, follow common sense.
A water heater leak may indicate rust and corrosion, and a large amount of water may be barely held back. Unplugging an electrical unit that has water on or near it may be life threatening, due to the potential for electrocution.
The best policy: (1) don’t ignore the problem, as it won’t go away and could get significantly worse and (2) call a Meyer & Depew professional immediately at the least sign of risk to yourself, your loved ones and your home or commercial building. A: Yes, and yes.
All our technicians are our direct employees — we don’t use subcontractors. We obtain all necessary permits before beginning any work, and are fully insured for Workers’ Compensation and General Liability.
Q: What brands of equipment does Meyer & Depew sell, install and service?
A: We service all major makes and models, including Carrier, Trane, Honeywell and many others. We have our preferences when making recommendations—namely, Carrier—but have the training to work on virtually any heating, cooling or ventilation system you might have.
Q: Do you offer financing?

Q: My home has a forced-air furnace but no air conditioning. Can I add central air?
A: Yes. We mount a cooling coil on top of your furnace and install a condensing unit outside.
Q: My home does NOT have forced-air heating, and so has no ductwork. Can I still get central air conditioning?
A: Absolutely! Today’s simple, ductless air conditioning options make it possible to install a quiet, efficient air-conditioning system in your home even if it doesn’t have ductwork.
Ductless air-conditioning systems consist of one or more indoor air-distribution units linked by refrigeration lines to an outdoor compressor. These flexible “hoses” can be positioned inside your walls and ceilings with a minimum of inconven-ience. Installing ductless air conditioning costs a little more than standard central air-conditioning systems but much less than the cost of installing ductwork and a central air-conditioner.
